SYNOPSIS FOR NEW MEMBERS

D’ni Restoration Council (DRC) [formed in 1997]:
* Dr. Richard A. Watson – Chair (Member #38)

Now overseeing two "newer ages" (6/17/02)
Phases of Exploration:
* Phase 1 – Initial Mapping
* Phase 2 – Structural Analysis
* Phase 3 – Detailed Analysis
* Phase 4 – Restoration

"I foresee this splitting into two phases at some point": Dr. Watson, May 7, 2002
* Phase 5 – Final pass before approval for Explorers to visit

Key people we have met:
* All members of the DRC and:
* Nikto/”reseng0205” – Restoration Engineer (#11)
* D'gr – Board Admin. (#15) [she]
* IMForeman - Authorized Explorer (#140)

Places of interest:
* Ae'Gura Island :

Referred to as "the city."
The City on the cavern wall is then referred to as "the City Proper."
In 1999, a major expedition brought needed machinery and tools to City.
Restoration is started in 2000 on The Island (Ae’Gura).
Dr. Watson (#38) is working on Ae’Gura Island.
On 3/12/02, a courtyard structure fell, resulting in indefinite restricted access.
A large portion of Ae’gura will be opened to authorized explorers in the near future even though many areas are damaged and being repaired. (8/27/02)
* D’ni neighborhoods :

Were small self-contained community areas on the fringe of the City Proper.
Many of these were fairly well preserved during the destruction.
These were some of the first areas restored and made available to authorized explorers.
In August 2001, D’ni neighborhoods are discovered.
Neighborhood restoration is started in October of 2001.
In January 2002, the DRC celebrated 5 year anniversary with opening of neighborhood.
See also Bevin neighborhood , and Seret neighborhood .
* Bevin neighborhood :

Bevin neighborhood received final approval from the DRC and was the first neighborhood opened to a group from the surface (3/19/02).
Robyn Miller was given tour of Bevin on 3/25/02.
Ahyoheek gaming board is located in Bevin.
Restoration of Bevin neighborhood continued (3/29/02).
KI snapshot of Bevin released (taken 5/3/02).
Attendees at the Mysterium gathering in Philadelphia were given tour of Bevin via remote live feed on 7/20/02.
* Seret neighborhood :

A KI snapshot of the Seret neighborhood balcony (with Dr. Watson and Rand?) was released (taken on 8/14/02).
* The Cove :

Cove restoration efforts mentioned by DRC (4/25/02).
Approved for Phase 2 status (passed Phase 1 review) (5/20/02).
* Eder Kemo [Also known as the Bevin Garden Age] :

Book was previously found in the Bevin Neighborhood.
Completed Phase 5 (5/29/02)
This small area was the first Age available to authorized explorers (5/29/02).
Attendees at the Mysterium gathering in Philadelphia were given tour of the Garden Age via remote live feed on 7/20/02.
Phil Henderson, one of the people working for Dr. Sutherland, found a way to get through a door in Eder Kemo which the DRC had never been able to open. Phil indicated (in a KI message) that he had “found a way” and that he was not coming back.
* Industrial Complex :

Found (about 4/5/02) on the south side of the cavern.
Will undergo Phase 1 shortly (as of 4/29/02).
Three interiors received Phase 1 approval on 5/13/02
Industrial Complex is still under Phase 2 status (6/17/02)
* KI Annex :

Referred to by Victor Laxman as “ KI host sight annex area” (4/17/02).
Received approval to begin Phase 3 (5/29/02).
* Teledahn :

Douglas Sharper (not a DRC member) was responsible for cleanup.
The linking book for Teledahn was found by Douglas Sharper.
As of 4/22, hoping for Phase 4 completion approval (& thus enter Phase 5).
Did not receive Phase 4 approval on 4/29.
Michael Engberg and Douglas Sharper worked to get ready for another Phase 4 review.
Teledahn approved for Phase 5 status (5/20/02).
Officially completed Phase 5 on 6/14/02 (Douglas Sharper and restoration engineers worked hard to get Teledahn to this point).
Age is now (6/17/02) open to authorized explorers.
* Tokotah Building :

All weekly meetings of the DRC are held in the Tokotah Building.
Looking for Phase 2 approval in about 3 weeks (5/22/02).
Second floor will have Phase 2 review June 8/9 weekend.
Headquarters will move to second floor after Phase 5 completion.
Second floor received Phase 2 approval (6/17/02), now in Phase three.
* Other Ages:
+ Two "new Ages":

They have received Phase 3 approval, so are now in Phase 4 (6/17/02).
The two "newer Ages" are now being overseen by Michael Engberg (#74) (6/17/02).
+ A "new Age":

Book recently discovered in the industrial area (6/21/02).
It has been added to the restoration schedule (6/21/02).
The initial "maintainer trip" to the newest Age on 7/22/02 showed that it will have much to offer.
+ Two Books:

Two Book were found in one of the neighborhoods and have been added to the list of Books scheduled for preliminary evaluation (8/15/02).
+ Rebek:

Scheduled for a Phase 2 review on 7/9/02.
It did not pass the Phase 2 review because of environmental hazards (7/11/02).
The DRC voted to discontinue restoration for now in order to focus effort on ages with less risk to the restoration teams (7/11/02).
“The environment is a large space with some unusual gravitational/magnetic anomalies. We don’t consider it a safe place to be spending a lot of time at the moment. . . . ..”: Dr. Watson – 8/9/02 11:23 AM.

Concepts/Observations:
* How D’ni is reached from the Earth surface is a DRC secret.
* No Myst linking books have yet been found.
* Insects have been seen in D’ni (currently).
* Fish have been seen in D'ni (currently).
* No D’ni natives have been found.
* Intra-age linking is not "possible".

Key words, acronyms, etc.:
* Ahyoheek = A gaming board (currently in Bevin)
* BoA = Book of Atrus
* BoD = Book of D’ni
* BoT = Book of Tiana
* D’ni Desk Reference = D’ni Reference Desk = www.dnidesk.com .
* Dougm = Doug McBride
* DRF = (Only conjecture on what this acronym stands for)
* Firemarbles = D'ni light source
* IMF = IMForeman Authorized Explorer (#140)
* Kerath’s Arch = A huge arch made of stone which forms the entrance to the harbor (of the City Proper?).

Atrus described it as made of undecorated blocks, each the size of a great mansion, the whole thing was ten blocks tall, and its entrance so big that you could quite easily have passed even the largest of the islands through it.
"All the D'ni kings sailed through the arch," Gehn said. "They would be sent to the southlands to be tutored in the arts of kingship, . . ..” (BoA 103)
A sketch of the Arch appears on page 104 of BoA.
It was undamaged in the Fall of D’ni per Atrus’ observations (BoA 103).
The DRC logo is believed to be based on a stylized representation of the Arch of Kerath.
* KI = Inter-age & intra-age communications system

The device is called a “KI” because of the D’ni numeral for “3” on the device which looks like the English letters “K” “I”.
Pronounced “key” or “kee”. Plural: “keys”.
The D’ni name for Arabic number 3 is Sehn (per Dr KI Lord)
First found on Feb. 6, 2002
Contains brilliant display technology – small hand-worn device projects full-field display when held toward eyes.
Maintainers made regular use of the KI technology, but it was evidently on the verge of being available to the D’ni elite.
Victor Laxman is developing KI technology.
As of June 7: Inter-Age functionality, as well as photo capabilities, are being finalized (C-Class KI with software version 0.89).
Numerous updates have been made to the C-Class KIs, including instant communication between maintainer defined age zones (8/27/02).
Sound capture tests are scheduled (8/27/02).
* Maintainers = Members of the D'ni Guild of Maintainers

They regularly inspected the Ages for stability and safety as part of their duties.
* MT Book system
Cavern MT links were adapted to be used in conjunction with the KI.
Used to get around efficiently.
A KI must be registered at a particular MT link in order to have it show up as a destination in the Nexus.
* Nexus: Used in conjunction with MT Book system.

The processes and mechanisms in the Nexus are definitely KI related.
As of Oct. 3, Dr. Watson expressed concerns over the “oddities of the Nexus”.
* OOC = Out of Cavern = Out of Character
* OT = Off Topic
* Powermarbles = D’ni power source

Seem to be related to firemarbles, but release energy faster and burn out quicker.
The D'ni powered some remarkable equipment with them.
* Shorah = peace (used for hello and goodbye)

Time keeping in D’ni:
* April 21, 2002 coincided with the start of D’ni year 9658
* Hahr: Roughly equivalent to one earth year
* Vai-lee: Similar to Earth "month". There are 10 vai-lee-tee per hahr.
* Yahr: Similar to "day".

There are 290 yahr-tee per hahr.
A yahr therefore lasts ~30 hours and 14 minutes
A yahr lasts ~1.26 Earth surface days
Before the fall of D'ni, the light producing lake algae had an on-off-on cycle of one yahr.
* Gahr-tah-vo: ~6 hours and 3 minutes of Earth surface time.
* Tah-vo: ~14.5 minutes of Earth surface time.
* Gor-ahn: ~36 seconds of Earth surface time.
* Pro-rahn: ~1.5 seconds of Earth surface time.
* "-tee" is added at the end of a word in the D'ni language to denote the plural.
* See D'ni Essentials for more detail.
* Go to http://sirrus.cyan.com/Online/D%27ni/Time for more complete discussion of D'ni timekeeping.

Much thanks to D'gr (#15), Scraper (#364), phgreer (#133), Dr KI Lord (#214), and Odysseus (#664) for their help in upgrading content of the original post.
