Impresionante, no ?

Aquí tenéis la traducción en inglés de la noticia completa (incluyendo comentarios de Rand Miller) :

Photograph: The peaceful universe of Myst is invented of any part, filled of
strange enigmas. Conceived on the same mode, the world of Myst Online should
open its doors in 2003. Image

Los Angeles correspondence

Barbe (beard) pepper and salt, smile of those which misé (bet) large, Rand
Miller announced in E3 the partnership with Ubisoft and launching the next
year of Myst Online (new code name of the project, after least elegant
"mudpie", is "pie".) The play was elaborate without his/her Robyn brother,
and when the legendary creator of Myst employs "us", it refers to its
company of the State of Washington, Cyan Worlds. Myst Online is derived from
Myst : the players turn over in the ruins of the civilization of ny, with
for project rebuilding their city, and the first images, presented of
exclusiveness at E3, are imposing.

Why a "Myst" on line?

That appeared natural to us to pass on line to continue what we had always
done: to try to build the most realistic possible place, where people can
lose themselves. One imagined a means of working out these worlds without
having to destroy them, nor to safeguard them in CD. The play on line
enables us to do that. Our worlds never die. In Myst, you have the concept
of the "ages", these universes secondary which you can explore with friends.
It is one of the keys of what we try to do. And one of the hardest things.
Once that the play will be launched, we will have a studio which will
continue to create, to enrich its universe and to leave the characters each
day, during months and months.

With which plays on line you did play recently?

The last in which I took part was Dark Age of Camelot. These plays are
amusing, but I cannot imagine the commun run of the Net surfers to immerse
myself in it. So much of windows appear on the screen, there are so much
easy ways, short cuts keyboard to be controlled... It is really necessary to
be justified to want to learn how to play there. One of the reasons of the
success of Myst, it is that the players did not need all these instructions.
Just of a marvellous world to explore.

More specifically, which will be the differences between "Myst Online" and
the existing plays on line?

As in Myst, the characters will not pass from one level to the other. There
will be no economic system, of need "to kill" to obtain money, to buy
things, etc. No slaughter, not of death. We want to carry out the immersif
possible world graphically. We do it in 3d in real time by hoping that it
will be more beautiful than what was already made. There will be no either
play of role. You will not claim to be an elf or a giant. The player gets
dressed as he wants, jean, miniskirt... Who more is, the action takes place
today, not in the future or space. It is you, exploring a real place.

At which stage of the development are you?

Some testers carry out tests throughout the world, twenty-four hours out of
twenty-four. With very little contents for the moment. But they can already
chatter with a small microphone, or by transport text. At any moment of the
play. I chatter like that with testers several times per week. As if I had
been made friends in the world of the play. I do not know what they resemble
in truth, when I speak to them, I have at the head the image of their
misadventures.

Can one expect enigmas way "Myst"?

Yes, but not also complicated. The goal is not to have people who play forty
hours per week... Nobody has as many spare time to play. But it is pleasant
to take place of privileged appointment and to envisage one hour in the week
during which you explore with your friends and your family.

Will the environment change with time. Will the characters age?

Absolutely. We can have cycles of days and nights very long in certain
"ages". In other "ages", certain seasons are not terrestrial but last two
years. One can make much things while playing with time. Example: your
character arrives close to a lake which starts to freeze. You will have to
wait until it is sufficiently cold to go above and to join the island on
other side. It is very exciting. One will be able also to change certain
elements of the universes scenarized in advance and to let the other
elements occur with the wire of time. By hoping that that can last of the
years.

Will the play function on monthly subscription?

I think that yes, at prices similar to those of competition (10-12 euros
approximately, note). We will launch it in the current of the next year.
There should be a product in store and a subscription.

"Myst" has the reputation to have made take off the sale of readers of
CD-Rom in the Nineties. Do you have this kind of ambition for "Myst Online"?

I have this kind of ambition (laughter), but we must remain realistic. My
goal is to conceive what, I think, will be the future of the entertainment.
The Internet with high flow is in the heart of this future. But there is no
currently product of entertainment impossible to circumvent for the fast
Internet. Nobody still discovered the headlight application.

How to make, taking into account the adoption still relatively slow of the
Internet with high flow in Europe?

It is necessary to try to make the play available to the Net surfers who
have slow modems. Certain aspects of the play go very well on narrow
band-width. The walks in the districts for example... but the vocal
discussions sound quickly "metal". In all the cases, even with the United
States, it is surprising for which point one needs few subscribers to make
function the play.

But on which miraculous formula do you hope to gather a large audience,
which is not yet set on plays on line?

There is not. Myst attracted people because we created splendid places. The
sites belonged to the play. In parallel, it is necessary that to play is
easy. Nobody supports lira a handbook to adjust the clock of their video
tape recorder. The players want to be immersed immediately.

According to certain sources, you spent 350 000 dollars per month of
preparation... without counting the team work when the play is launched!

This figure is exact. But the total budget is not as high as what people
think. One reinvested the benefit drawn from our other products and Ubisoft
became a partner. We are under discussion with capital-risqueurs of the
American North-West. For the remainder, I prefer not to make calculation. It
is very expensive and that will take time to refund.
