Underground City Awakens

Explorers gather in Ae'gura (Echo Staff Photo / CAGrayWolf)Ae’gura - November 17, 2003, marked a monumental turning point for the restoration community. After years of careful preparation and planning, the D’ni Restoration Council (DRC) officially opened the underground city of D’ni for exploration and public study.

The D’ni Restoration Council is the primary managing body within Ae’gura proper, and has guided the restoration of D’ni, fueled by generous endowments from Elias Zandi and software publisher Ubisoft, since the project’s inception in 1997.

Although the area has officially been opened, the DRC is using an abundance of caution in their receipt of explorers into the City. Thousands are expected to visit D’ni for the first time within the coming months. In order to ensure safety, decorum, and respect for the ruins during this time of transition, explorers are being conveyed into the City in manageable groups. The DRC’s official website advises explorers to proceed with care: “While safety is always of utmost importance to the D’ni Restoration Council, we need to remind everyone that there are still plenty of hazards and dangers. Please use caution and please be patient as we try to open up as much of the City as possible while maintaining a high degree of caution.”

To facilitate explorer communication and encourage a thorough documentation of the restoration effort, the DRC is issuing wrist-worn “KI” devices to all visitors. These devices, which allow users to communicate in real time; take and transmit notes and photos; pinpoint their location via geographical positioning; access protected areas; and establish site markers, are available in the Gahreesen Age. New explorers will find a DRC authorized Gahreesen linking book within their Neighborhood linking room.

Individuals who have been issued a KI device in the past are encouraged to visit Gahreesen and pick up the latest KI update. Victor Laxman of the DRC advises that work on the KI device is ongoing. All explorers are asked to upgrade to the latest version at their earliest convenience.

In addition to the guidance provided by the DRC, a group of knowledgeable community members has come forward to welcome and orient newcomers in D’ni. This group, the Guild of Greeters, will be a visible presence throughout the restoration effort. See the “News” and “Interviews” pages for further details on their efforts.
